What is CODEX-b?

The CODEX-b (COmpact Detector for EXotics at LHCb) experiment is a proposed particle detector that would be installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in an underground cavern next to LHCb’s interaction point (IP8).

Its main purpose is to search for exotic long-lived particles (LLPs), which, if detected, would be a clear sign of new physics.

What is the CERN LHC?

CERN is a particle physics laboratory, located outside of Geneva, Switzerland.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a circular particle accelerator that accelerates particles such as protons to almost the speed of light and collides them together at various points around the circular ring.

One such point is IP8, where CODEX-b is planned to be located.

CODEX-b members perform preliminary measurements to learn how to install the detector.
